The city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, sits on the Canada-U.S. border, on the western bank of the Niagara River across from Niagara Falls, New York. It covers a land area of almost 210 square kilometers, home to a population of more than 88,000 people.
Incorporated in 1903, the city is built along the Niagara Falls waterfalls, a site of busy tourism that began in the 19th century. The area today is filled with observation towers, high-rise hotels, shops and museums appealing to visitors, in addition to legal gambling that became part of the economy in the mid-1990s. The city hosts a number of annual festivals and events, most notably the Winter Festival of Lights, Canada’s largest lights festival. Niagara Falls is nicknamed “The Honeymoon Capital of the World.”
